Professor Dr Thomas Rakow teaches the fundamentals of databases and e-business, along with their applications. He advises on various research programmes and collaborates with companies on website development and project management. Prior to his appointment, Dr Rakow led numerous national and international projects for companies in the information and telecommunications industries, as well as for publishing houses and large-scale research organisations.
Dr Rakow is a professor in the Media Department at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (UAS). He led the project funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia for the development of open educational resources (OER) in the field of database systems. As a member of a working group of the German Informatics Society (GI), he contributed to the recommended curriculum for the Bachelor's degree programme in Media Informatics. He wrote the chapter on 'Databases on the Web' for the German-language book Taschenbuch Datenbanken. At the turn of the millennium, he led the development of the LINK journal and book publication portal, as well as the Springer publishing group's website, springeronline.com. While at the GMD Research Center for Information Technology (later the Fraunhofer Institute) in Darmstadt, he developed and led a group specialising in object-oriented and multimedia database systems.
Dr Rakow received his diploma in computer science from the Technical University of Braunschweig and his doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt. The title of his doctoral thesis was 'Semantic Concurrency Control in Object-Oriented Database Systems' (in German).
