During this summer semester, eight students from the Media Informatics program carried out a project aimed at digitizing the admission, documentation, and archiving processes for trauma room patients. The project was conducted in collaboration with Solingen Municipal Hospital, the Academy of Trauma Surgery (AUC), and the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU).
The project addresses the documentation of emergency patients in trauma rooms, which is still performed using extensive paper-based forms in most hospitals. The data collected through these protocols are typically entered manually by medical staff into the AUC's trauma registry for the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), including for research purposes. This process is time-consuming, inefficient, and varies between hospitals. In addition, it can lead to data loss due to illegible or incomplete paper documentation.
The objective of this semester project was to develop an interactive prototype as a proof of concept for app-supported trauma room documentation. Together with the involved stakeholders, the students analyzed the detailed requirements for the system and implemented a prototype through an iterative development process. The prototype was specifically optimized for data entry on tablet devices.
The prototype was presented to a broader professional audience on June 18, 2026, during a meeting of the TraumaRegister working group in Bensberg. Feedback on both the project and the students’ work was highly positive and led to engaging and constructive discussions.
Building on this proof-of-concept prototype, the next step will be the development of a cross-platform application (Android, iOS, Web, Windows, etc.) including a backend infrastructure.
