Talk on Data Collection and AI in Education

On January 20, Prof. Dr. Philipp Krieter and Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter (University of Bremen) gave a talk as part of a special event at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum at the invitation of Prof. Dr. Hendrik Heuer. The presentations were followed by an interesting and lively discussion on the topics.

The title of the presentation was: “Trustworthy AI: From Data Collection to Organizational Embedding in Educational Settings”.

Philipp Krieter started with an overview of data collection on mobile devices. Smartphones have changed the way we learn, communicate, and work. But how do learners actually use AI on their mobile devices in the learning process? To answer these questions, detailed data on mobile interactions is needed without violating privacy. Since classic app logs provide only limited information, long-term screen recordings offer insights into in-app behavior. With the help of AI, computer vision, and machine learning, specific activities can be identified from this data. A strict local-first approach ensures data protection. The presentation introduces this tracking approach and current research perspectives.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter presented findings from the four-year IMPACT project on the use of AI-based feedback in higher education. Topics included a technical solution for feedback on learning and explanatory videos based on an AI pipeline with LLMs and multimodal models, as well as success factors for sustainable organizational anchoring. It became clear which structural, procedural, and legal framework conditions are necessary to be able to use AI-based systems in the long term. Finally, an outlook was given on a current research project on communicative AI in higher education within the framework of the DFG research group „Communicative AI“.
